Group 3: Individuals and Societies

All students will take Individuals and Societies, what has been traditionally called social studies, each of their four years at the Utica Academy for International Studies. Students will approach Individuals and Societies from an integrated approach that will unify state requirements for Civics, Economics, Geography, and History within the context of two courses.

Option 1

Option 2

Each of these courses is required of all students and the 11th and 12th grade courses can be taken at the standard or higher levels.  Students will be prepared to take the IB examinations as well as the AP World History examination after the 10th grade year.  Each course is designed to increase student capacity to identify, analyze critically and evaluate theories, concepts and arguments relating to the nature and activities of individuals and societies. The History of World Civilizations course is designed to provide students a foundational understanding of World History and geography, world governments and Economics.  The intent of this course is to assure that students successfully engage these three critical areas of social studies instruction within an inclusive environment that treats each of them as they ought to be, dependent on the other disciplines.  It is difficult to teach government and societal structures without history, geography and economics.  Conversely, it is difficult to teach economics without an understanding of the impact of history on economic development, the cost and availability of goods due to geography and the interconnectedness of world civilizations.  In short, the discipline of social studies is a broad brush that covers many topics each time it touches the canvas.  Rather than raise artificial borders between these subjects, this course aims to meet the philosophy of this program by integrating these curricular areas and assuring that students are learning in context and analyzing the subjects therein within that contextual environment.
