Group 4: Experimental Sciences

All students in the Utica Academy for International Studies will take four years of Experimental Sciences.  Student options for science course work will be determined after their 9th grade years.  Students will have a choice to focus on one of three areas:

Students will choose one of three pathways for their experimental sciences.  Their choice of pathway will be determined in consultation with their science teacher and their counselor based on the 9th grade interdisciplinary course.  This course is designed to assure students receive preparation in general science, Chemistry and Physics to ease transition into the advanced level course and lab work that will be expected of them in their 10th - 12th grade years.  Every student will take AP Biology as sophomores.  Each of these courses is designed to facilitate student acquisition, investigation and application of the processes and principles of science.  This curriculum will include project based learning that will focus on the social implications of scientific discovery.  This will also prepare students for their Group 4 Internal Assessments (IAs) that require a project based student-designed lab experience.

The pathways are:

Biology PLUS Pathway

Chemistry Pathway

Physics Pathway

Modifications to these pathways are possible to facilitate additional science courses in the 11th and 12th grades.

** This pathway requires a student to withdraw from their elective to take at least 1 year of chemistry or physics during the junior or senior years.
