Graduates throwing caps in the airFor the graduating Utica Academy of International Studies Class of 2019, it is the moments that make the difference.

Graduate Sam Saba, addressing the 97 graduates of the Class of 2019, challenged his classmates to avoid “always looking ahead” as they pursue their life’s goals, but rather live in the now.

“Take the time to remember the moments, savor them, experience them, live in the here and now, take your eyes off of the foreground and shift them to what’s right in front of you,” Saba said.  “Live for the moments, the daily nuances, the pieces of your life that have gone unnoticed prior.”

Superintendent Dr. Christine Johns asked students to carry on the legacy of UAIS of leadership and embrace challenges.

“UAIS graduates are leaders – they are leaders in such areas as academics, business, government and service. Wherever they have chosen to place their passions, UAIS graduates are at the top of their chosen professions,” she said. “We challenge you to build on this legacy.”

This year, the UAIS class had 73 valedictorians, two salutatorians and 18 UCS Advanced Placement Scholars. Every member of the class is a candidate for the Global Seal of Language for mastering two or more languages, and collectively earned more than $12 million in scholarships.

UAIS principal Shaun Greene-Beebe noted that despite successes, graduates will at certain times in their future experience challenges.

“Failure doesn’t define you, but how you respond to failure tells everyone what you’re made of,” she said. “So be strong!  Lead with your heart…it doesn’t make you weak, people will respect you for it.”

Board of Education Dr. Robert Ross compared the journey of 2019 graduates to a poem by Robert Frost, The Road Not Taken.

“Each of you took your own path, the road less traveled so to speak, and as the poet said, that has made all of the difference,” Dr. Ross said. “Life is not a race to the end, we know what our common destiny is, it’s the road that you travel- the journey – that matters. Choose wisely and enjoy the ride.”

Commencement speaker Isabelle Hoffman compared UAIS students to rock climber Alex Honnold, who scaled a 3000-foot mountain without the aid of ropes. Facing the challenges of the future, UAIS graduates will be able to draw on the experiences they had at their International Baccalaureate program to reach new heights.

“We will climb. Inch by inch, foot by foot, one day at a time,” she said. “The whole time empowered by the knowledge that we have the support of such an amazing community of individuals.”
