Collin Syler, of the Utica Academy for International Studies, was among the top 15 students applying for the prestigious 2017 Alumni Distinguished Scholarship.

Syler, who competed against more than 1,100 future Spartans, received the scholarship valued at $120,000 to cover tuition and room and board.

Alumni Distinguished Scholars were selected from more than 1,100 of the top high school seniors who applied to MSU and took an intensive general knowledge exam in January. A committee composed of faculty and administrators then selected them based on the results of the exam, high school programs and achievements, other standardized test scores and interviews with the finalists. The scholarship was announced in February.

Syler and all scholarship recipients are part of the university’s Honors College.

He plans to study education at MSU.

In high school, he served as the UAIS Student Voice Committee President, French Club President, was a Trumpet Section Leader in the UHS March Band, and earned a Seal of Gobal Language for demonstrating proficiency in multiple languages.
