Student working with elementary students

As an elementary student, Sriteja Malempati saw young adults in his community giving their time to create better opportunities for him.

As a young adult, Malempati know now that it is his time to give back.

"Seeing all the parent volunteers has really inspired me to get involved," he said.

For several years now, Malempati has run an after-school Spanish Club at Messmore Elementary for 5th and 6th graders where the students were taught the basics of the Spanish Language.

Every week the students were introduced to new vocabulary and tested on the previous week’s lessons.  His goal was not only to expose the students to another language, but also to help them transition from elementary to junior high school.

Malempati’s other volunteering activities for the past several years include helping coach the Math Olympiad teams at Messmore Elementary, volunteering at Gleaners Food Bank as well as the annual Elementary Science Olympiad Competitions.

As a result of his work, Malempati is the recipient of a President’s Volunteer Service Award for volunteering more than 150 hours.
